Hi, Is there a way to see only town names, and not misc attractions, etc?
a. When I zoom in quite quickly the view with a few major towns and cities becomes only misc things to do and stay.
b. If I zoom in on a town, I the name of the town is lost in all the other highlighted locations, and sometimes I can not even find it.
c. If I do find it, I can not click on it and add it to my agenda. Town I have tried receltyly, all in New Hampshire: Littleton, Hanover, Lebenon, and more.
You can turn off ‘miscellaneous’ places by flipping the Places toggle in the map options (see screenshot). The points of interest with an illustration, like My Washington, are part of the map and can not be turned off. The automatic pins we display for all types of points of interest scattered on the map will be hidden if you turn off auto-places and should give you a clearer view of the map.
Rather than adding towns and cities from the map (they are not ‘clickable’ to add there!), try searching for them instead. If you use the Add a Waypoint button on the Itinerary or Explore tabs you can type in the name of the town and add it to your trip. The planner will try to route you efficiently after you add that new place, but you can also always shift that stop by dragging and dropping!
I am glad there is a setting to turn off the misc places. Now can you add an option to show the names of all the towns? Its seem pretty random which ones are shown, and it changes if you zoom out and zoom in again. But a town like Littleton, Vt. does not show at anytime for me. Any map should show all town at some level of zoom I would think.
I know about searching for places, but the problem is search does not find many if most smaller towns. Try St. Johnsbury, VT for example. (too bad its not possible to click on a town name, if you can find it, to add it)
PS: Sorry if I am being a bit harsh, but I see so much potential in Roadtrippers, but see also that basic features for preparing a trip, especially when drafting one out, are missing. Do keep up the good work!
I do see that we’re having a hard time returning a search result for St. Johnsbury, VT. Looks like we’re just returning place results in that town. Our engineering team is looking into this example and I have hope they’ll reprioritize search results for it soon!
For those tiny towns you’re having trouble adding, you could use our pin dropper feature to add the location to your trip! To do this, right-click on the map until a pin is dropped. The address of the pin will appear along with a Add to Trip button.
Thanks for looking into the town search function. I agree that sometimes a town is the first in the results and at the other extreme not in the list, or, I think, part way down. As a stop gap they could make the box longer and scrollable, if the issue is not that search does not find it but that the results box cuts it off because its ranked lower.
Regarding showing the towns, I stand (partially) corrected. Indeed, if I turn off ‘Places’ under the global map options, I will see them all as I zoom in. BUT, if I have places on, many town names will not show. It seems like the places shown overshadow them. I suspect the root cause is the same as above—the town name does not have a high enough ranking to get displayed.
Hanover, NH is actually a weird one… and interesting, I believe our pin is correct! For comparison, if you search for Hanover, NH in other popular search apps (i.e. Google Maps) you’ll see the same result. The town’s boundaries are large, which is likely why it is ‘pinned’ in the middle. Interesting situation for sure.
The team did reprioritize St. Johnsbury, VT for you!
Yes, it is a large township. I used google maps and starred the location with no in between action and it locates the start in the town. MS Maps on Windows, does the same thing. Soooo…
I do appreciate your detailed replies, and the extra effort you make to fix town locations. Keep up the good work.
