I am doing a double-feature drive this year; heading straight from Utah to Kentucky in May (quick and efficient), but in August, I’ll be making the return trip back to Utah with my mom and my dog, and this time, we want to turn into an adventure.
We’ll have more time to explore in August, so I am looking for must-see stops, hidden gems, scenic drives, quirky roadside attractions, national parks, and great food along the way. If you’ve done a similar route - or even part of it - I’d love to hear your recommendations.
We are open to peaceful nature spots, small charming towns, local eats, or anything that breaks up the drive in a fun and memorable way. Bonus points for anything that’s mom approved a little off the beaten path. Thanks in advance, and safe travels to all!
Sounds like an awesome time, especially with your mom in tow! Here are some of my favorites between those two states - depending on what route you take:
I stopped there last year, and it was super cool – I wish I had more time to spend there. It’s really humbling to think about the people and culture that built it and how important it was to those people for so long. The museum is closed for renovations, but there’s a cool QR code guided tour you can do with your phone. As a bonus, it’s a super cool place to see the sunset.
I’m not sure how far out of your way this would be (depends on where in Kentucky you’re leaving from), but Casey, Illinois is a lot of fun – I stopped there last year, too! It’s got a boatload of “world’s largest” things. Here’s an article we published about it a few years back.
If you’re into zoos, make sure you go through Omaha and visit the Henry Doorly Zoo. It’s seriously unbelievable.
And if you’re going through Lincoln, you could check out the state capitol building which has really pretty art deco style. If you’re a college football fan, you could check out Memorial Stadium.
If you’re planning to take I80 on your way back to Utah, I highly recommend stopping at Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest!
Such a gorgeous area to stretch your legs and break up the drive. There are several easy (and dog friendly) trails with gorgeous views. Or you can drive the Scenic Byway and snap a picture of the mountain range.
If you’re taking I70 through Colorado, stop in Palisade and grab a peach ()! They are worth the hype. August is peach season so you’ll be passing through right on time - how peach-y.
Depending on where you’re arriving in Utah (and if you’re up for even more adventure), you could take I70 to US-50 W to pass through Gunnison, CO and stop at the Black Canyon National Park. This park is seriously underrated!
Bonus if you can stop at Crested Butte in between - the wildflowers should be in bloom by then!
